powercut is a non-profit map of power cuts in Europe. You can use the map, the country pages and the town pages without an account. Nothing on them tracks you: no analytics, no advertising, no cookies.
If you sign up for alerts
To send you alerts we keep:
- your email address, and your password as a salted PBKDF2 hash (we cannot read it), or the ID Google gives us if you sign in with Google;
- the places you save: a name, a centre point and a radius;
- for each device you turn notifications on for, the push address your browser gives us;
- which outages we have already told you about, for seven days, so you are not told twice;
- a sign-in cookie, which only keeps you signed in.
We use these only to send you the alerts you asked for. We do not send newsletters or marketing, and we do not sell or share the data.
Who handles it
- The site runs on Cloudflare, which stores the data in its D1 database.
- Notifications go through your browser maker’s push service (Google, Mozilla or Apple). The message is encrypted on our side, so the push service cannot read it.
- If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your email address and an account ID, nothing else.
- Email alerts, when they are switched on, are sent through Resend.
Deleting it
On the alerts page, “Delete my account” removes your account, your places, your devices and the alert history at once. Turning notifications off on a device removes that device’s push address.
Map data
The outages come from the network operators’ own public feeds. Background map: night lights from NASA Black Marble (GIBS), map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, tiles from OpenFreeMap. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts.
